Myanmar yesterday expressed appreciation for the assistance and compensation money given by the Thai government to the families of Myanmar nationals who perished in the railway crossing accident on Oct 11.

Labour Minister Suchart Chomklin said Myo Myint Naing, labour attache at the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok, was thankful for donations made by the ministry and relevant agencies to the victims’ families.

Nineteen people were killed and 44 others injured when a bus collided with a freight train at a railway crossing in Chachoengsao on Sunday. Six Myanmar workers were killed in the accident during a merit-making trip.

The ministry has paid out 370,888 baht in total, including 50,000 baht per person for funeral costs and the remainder from their pension fund.

The labour attache reportedly said he was glad that Thailand’s Labour Ministry and the Social Security Office (SSO) had not ignored the plight of the migrant workers and instead had offered humanitarian assistance to the families of the victims.

“Although the labourers died, the benefits that were received today will help relieve troubles for their families and relatives,” he was quoted by the minister as saying.
