Asean discuss human rights in Vientiane

VIENTIANE, June 29 (KPL)- Representatives of Asean member countries met at the 6th meeting of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) held here yesterday to discuss and approve plan for 2012-2015.

The plan is expected to be proposed to the 44th ASEAN Foreign Ministerial Meeting which will be held in mid-July for consideration of approval.

The five-day AICHR meeting was under the chairmanship of Indonesia’s AICHR representative Rafendi Djamin. Indonesia is Chair of ASEAN and AICHR for 2011.

The Lao side is led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Bounkeuth Sangsomsack who is also AICHR’s representative for the Lao PDR.

The AICHR meeting will further discuss draft Terms of Reference of Thematic Studies on Migration, and Corporate Social Responsibility.

At this meeting, Laos and Cambodia delegations will together propose the draft Terms of Reference of Thematic Studies on Peaceful Rights to the meeting. In addition, the Lao delegation will propose two drafts of Terms of Reference of Thematic Studies on Treatment and Healthcare Rights, and Education Rights.

Also on schedule of the meeting is draft ASEAN statement of human rights. Once approved, it will be a plan of action on cooperation on promoting and protecting human rights in ASEAN in the future.

The meeting will also approve guideline for the ASEAN Human Rights Drafting Sector which will be established by the AICHR and open its first meeting in Vientiane Capital on between 1 and 2 July. (KPL)
