[Cambodia] Foreign worker recruitment extended

Labour Minister Ith Samheng has extended the deadline for companies to apply to recruit foreign workers for next year from this month to the end of next month.

In a statement issued on Friday, he noted that a 2016 Labour Law directive on the Introduction of Automated Workforce data management system requires all companies to apply for permission to recruit foreigners for the following year by the end of each November.

“The ministry has seen that some owners or directors of enterprises or establishments are still late in applying for permission to employ foreign workers for 2020,” Mr Samheng said. “Because of this situation, the Ministry of Labour would like to inform owners or directors of enterprises or establishments that it is extending the deadline for applications to the end of December this year.”

He advised employers to hurry up and put in their application before December 31.

“The ministry will take action and impose a fine in accordance with the provisions in Chapter 16 of the Labour Law to those who fail to apply for permission and illegally employ foreign workers,” Mr Samheng noted.

Sandra d’Amico, vice president of the Cambodian Federation of Employers and Business Associations, yesterday welcomed the deadline extension.

“The year-end is a very busy period for companies and employers are not able to file the applications by the end of November,” she said. “The number of companies filing the applications is also rising so it is good for both employers and the government that the deadline is extended.”

According to a Labour Ministry report, there are 160,077 foreigners from 93 countries working in the Kingdom across all sectors. More than 100,000 are Chinese and the rest are Vietnamese, Filipinos, Thais, Indonesians, Taiwanese, Malaysians, South Koreans, Indians and Britons.
