[Myanmar] Licences of 16 foreign employment agencies permanently revoked

Of the licensed foreign employment agencies in Myanmar, 26 have had their licences revoked permanently for violations of the law and over 20 others suspended.

There are more than 260 foreign employment agencies in the country that can legally send workers to foreign countries such as Thailand, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macao, Qatar, Dubai, UAE and Geordan.

Those agencies have to follow the provisions of the 1999 foreign employment law. It prescribes that an unlicensed agency shall face a penalty of up to seven years’ jail for sending workers abroad.

From 2014 to 2020, the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population permanently revoked the licences of 16 foreign employment agencies and suspended those of 24 agencies for six months, one year, one year and a half, two years or three years.

There were also 45 agencies that returned their licences as they no longer wanted to run.

Authorities have urged Myanmar workers to go abroad only through legitimate agencies and warned that illegal agencies would face legal action.

Most Myanmar migrant workers go to Thailand with the number reaching several millions.
